
The Flinders Port Holdings’ (FPH) Berth 6 Extension represents a significant investment in South Australia’s port infrastructure, providing additional capacity to support future trade and maritime operations.
Before the combi wall, which forms the backbone of the extension, could be installed the construction team faced a critical challenge: how to safely and accurately position and drive some of the project’s largest structural elements in a marine environment.
That’s where temporary works became essential.
Madsen Giersing was engaged by McConnell Dowell to deliver the detailed design of the piling frame, a critical temporary works structure that enabled the safe and controlled installation of the combi wall system for the berth extension.
More Than Just a Support Structure
The Berth 6 Extension includes a 136-metre-long berth extension incorporating a combi wall formed by 1200mm diameter tubular piles and AZ18-700 sheet piles.
Installing these elements required more than simply providing a working platform. The piling frame was required to provide stability, alignment, access, and operational flexibility throughout the construction process while supporting the contractor’s installation methodology.
For marine infrastructure projects, installation accuracy is critical. Even small deviations can create challenges for subsequent construction activities, making temporary works an important contributor to project success.
